FAQ: FAQ

How did chiropractic get started?

Chiropractic got started in Davenport, Iowa over 100 years ago. In 1895 a "magnetic healer" by the name of D.D. Palmer noticed on that day the janitor, Harvey Lillard, who worked in his building was nearly totally deaf. Harvey explained to Dr. Palmer that he had lost most of his hearing 17 years ago. Dr. Palmer examined and noticed a bump which he determined to be a spinal vertebrae out of position. It seemed that Harvey noticed this bump right after he lost his hearing. Having a knowledge of anatomy, Dr. Palmer convinced Harvey to allow him to try to fix it by pushing the bone back into place.
History is uncertain to whether it was one visit or several, but result was Harvey got his hearing back ! From that point, Dr. Palmer changed his practice over to this new method of adjusting spinal bones that were out of position and allowing people to heal. His practice grew and the profession of chiropractic was born. Within two years, Dr. D.D. Palmer opened the first school of chiropractic, Palmer College of Chiropractic, on Brady street in Davenport.

What is chiropractic ?

Chiropractic is a health care profession based on a philosophy, science and art. The science of chiropractic is the science of the human body, how it functions, and how nervous system interference from subluxations effects that function. The art of chiropractic is the skill needed by chiropractors to correct subluxations with adjustments. And the philosophy of chiropractic is why it all works.

What is a 'Subluxation' ?

A subluxation (a.k.a. vertebral subluxation) is when one or more of the bones of your spine (vertebrae) move out of position and create pressure on, or irritate spinal nerves. Spinal nerves are the nerves that come out from between each of the bones in your spine. This pressure or irritation on the nerves then causes those nerves to malfunction and interfere with the signals traveling over those nerves.

What is a chiropractic adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment is a specific procedure of moving spinal vertebrae for the purpose if correction of vertebrae subluxations. The chiropractic adjustment is characterized by specific thrust applied to the vertebra utilizing parts of the vertebra and contiguous structures as levers to directionally correct articular malposition.

Will chiropractic care help me?

In a word, YES! Chiropractic helps you by working to free nervous system of interference from subluxations. This then allows your body's own innate healing power to help heal you and improve the overall quality of your life. Millions of people have found that chiropractic care helped them return to health after suffering with many different kinds of health problems. No matter what type of health situation you find yourself in, you will always be better off with a properly functioning nervous system free of interference from subluxations. Chiropractors actually help you return to health by removing interference to your body's nervous system.

When or how often do I need to seek for chiropractic cares?

More than 22 million people in America go to see a chiropractor each year. Although many people with back problems get help under chiropractic care, but chiropractic is not the treatment  only for back pain. About 35% of those are getting help with back problems and the remaining 65% are getting help with other issues, including joint pain, headaches, pain management for certain conditions and wellness care. Lots of our patients who finished their treatment for symptoms still come to see us regularly (once every one  two months) to maintain their conditions which already had improved. It would be a very good idea to see your chiropractor regularly even when you don't have symptoms or problems in order to maintain optimal health and body function.

Do chiropractic adjustments hurt?

Chiropractic adjustments are a painless procedure designed to re-align spinal bones and alleviate pressure on spinal nerves. In a small percentage of people the spine has been so fixated that the beginning of care may result in some soreness as the spine begins to move again. Since chiropractic adjustments are customized to each individual spine, adjustments are usually painless and actually feel good to the patient receiving them.
